Tariff Rates on imported vehicles & Tyres Set to rise by 60%.

Posted by Unknown Senin, 25 November 2013 0 komentar
The Federal Government has released the facts of new duties and levies payable on imported new and used vehicles as well as imported new tyres from next year, raising the tariff from 20 per cent to 70 per cent.
Dealers of imported vehicles estimated that the new rate would translate into an increase of 60 per cent on imported cars.
The Federal Executive Council had last month approved a new national automotive policy aimed at encouraging local production and assembling of new vehicles by having an imposition of a high import tariff on fully built vehicles. But the new rate was not given then.

A two-page document dated November 14, 2013 and signed by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, gave the new import tariff on cars as 70 per cent (of the price of each vehicle).
It stated that the fully built car would attract a duty of 35 per cent and a levy of another 35 per cent of the price of the vehicle.
Hitherto, importers/dealers parted with 20 per cent and two per cent as duty and levy, respectively on new cars. Ten per cent flat rate was also imposed on commercial vehicles. Although the new tariff on cars shows an increase of 48 per cent within the old rate, dealers have estimated that the showroom price of an imported car will rise by 60 per cent when other variables (costs) are added.

In other words, prices of imported cars currently being sold between N3m and N5m will shoot around N4.8m and N8m; while tokunbo vehicles selling for N800,000 will rise to N1.28m. People who spoke with the correspondent on the matter on Sunday also warned that there mightn't be adequate vehicles to meet the demand of the country next year.

A sales manager with one of many major dealers said, “Many of us are skeptical about ordering for new vehicles because we don't know if people would be ready to pay for about 60 per cent increase on the cars once the import duty and levy are put into the first cost of purchase.
“Even the supplies by local plants will obviously be grossly inadequate to meet the demand.”
The document, with reference number BD/FP/DO/09/189, also stated that fully built commercial vehicles would attract 35 per cent duty but no levy imposed.

Specifically, it stated, “Local assembly plants shall import completely knocked down (vehicles) at zero per cent duty; and semi-knocked down (vehicles) at five per cent duty. “Local assembly plants shall import fully built unit cars at 35 per cent duty and 20 per cent for commercial vehicles without levy, respectively in numbers add up to twice their CKD/SKD kits. Imported tyres would also cost more as from next year as 20 per cent duty and five per cent value added tax have been added to tyres of cars, buses and lorries.

“Local tyre manufacturing plants are to import tyres at five per cent duty in numbers add up to twice their production for two years from the date of commencement of production,” it stated.

Similar high tariff will also be charged on used vehicles, according to the document. It added that the Nigeria Customs Service “shall utilize the value of a new vehicle depreciated by 10 per cent per annum, implying 10 years amount of cars and by seven per cent per annum implying 15 year period for commercial vehicles. Either way, depreciation shouldn't be below 30 per cent of the value of the new vehicle equivalent.”

“Nigeria is blessed with abundance of talents, despite the prevalence of poor administration”– Ibru

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 23 November 2013 0 komentar

The performance of Super Eagles coach, Stephen Okechukwu Keshi came under scrutiny from a former board member of the Nigeria Football Federation, Emmanuel Ibru in Lagos. His  verdict? He scored Keshi 60 out of a hundred.

“Sixty per cent of the job on the team has been done, but a critical 40% needs to be done before the World Cup,” Ibru told Vanguard Sports in his office Thursday.

“He (Keshi), himself will admit that there is still a lot of work to be done but one thing going for him is that Nigeria is blessed with an abundance of talents, despite the prevalence of poor administration.”

On the positive side, Ibru said Keshi has been able to turn around the fortunes of the country’s football within such a short time. “Keshi has been able to achieve three major things within his nearly two years of being in charge. He won the Africa Cup of Nations, qualified for the World Cup and for the first time qualified Nigeria for CHAN. These are no mean feats.

Similarly, he said Keshi’s tenure has seen to the return of confidence in the Nigeria Premier League players as their likes have taken permanent shirts in the Eagles first team.

“Some of them like Godfrey Oboabona, Sunday Mba, Azubuike Egwuekwe, Francis James, among others have shown that they too have the quality to compete among the best in the world. Keshi has raised the profile of home-based players like never before.”

He also praised the team for the resilience exhibited against the Azzuris of Italy last Monday in England. “In terms of fighting spirit, I score them high as they were not intimidated and they got a very good result.  “But in terms of technicalities, I observed we played in fits, as we were blowing hot and cold. For long periods we were outplayed. There is still a lot of work to be done. We must not bask in the euphoria of the 2-2 result and gloss over what needs to be done,” he warned.

“To win the World Cup, the team has to show enough tactical discipline and consistency. There is still work to be done,” Ibru stressed.

Check out Nigeria’s highest paid CEOs

Posted by Unknown Jumat, 22 November 2013 0 komentar
Leadership has unveiled some of Nigeria's highest paid CEOs and the stories behind their rise to the top, based on authoritative reports, between 2009 and 2012. Read below

Being a successful and influential chief executive officer takes hard work, guts, sacrifice and a more-than-average knowledge of how the business environment works. Many who wish to be successful and influential wonder how others have achieved great things, thinking such feats are impossible in their bid to toe same path.
Nigeria boasts a slew of successful CEOs in almost every sector – banking, oil and gas, sports, health and manufacturing. LEADERSHIP Friday unveils some of them. Find the report after the break..

CEO, Stanbic IBTC, Sola David-Borha
As the managing director/CEO of Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc, David-Borha is one of the country’s highly-rated bankers. She is the highest paid director in Nigeria’s banking sector, with an annual remuneration of N177m. When broken down, this becomes N484, 931 daily, including weekends when may have no reason to go to work.

David-Borha has patiently risen through the ranks to get to where she is today. She was, at different times, responsible for overseeing the corporate finance and corporate banking, projects and structure finance, as well as asset management and private banking departments. At a time, she bore the burden of supervising treasury and finance services department.

David-Borha also headed the correspondent banking relationships’ department at Stanbic IBTC and served as a member of the executive committee. She was appointed to the bank’s board in 1994 and has held other positions, including a spell as director of Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc, Stanbic Nominees Nigeria Limited and Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers Limited. She was also appointed a member of the board of Financial Institutions Training Centre (FITC).  She did not miss serving as a member of the bank’s board credit, board nominations and risk management committees.
Having passed through these stages before rising to the pinnacle, David- Borha can be said to have, indeed, paid her dues and can be said to have exhibited a great degree of competence, experience, long career plan and hard work to get to her present position.

CEO, Mobil Oil Nigeria Limited, Tunji Oyebanji
Mobil Oil Nigeria (MON) is one of Nigeria’s major petroleum products marketing companies. As its chief executive officer, Oyebanji is on an annual remuneration of N85m. When broken down, this amounts to a daily pay of about N231, 956.

As chairman/CEO/managing director of MON, there is no doubt that Oyebanji’s hard-work, commitment and dedication has been largely responsible for the turn-around which the company’s fortune has experienced, making it stand tall among other competing oil corporates.
The company now operates more than 200 retail outlets spread across the 36 states of Nigeria and the Fedeeral Capital Territory; it owns three plants (in Apapa, Lagos State) where lubricants, petroleum jelly and insecticides are manufactured.

As at 2011, MON had an annual turn-over of N63.1bn, from N58.34bn in 2010. With a combined dividend per share of N5 and bonus issue of one for five shares, MON has, arguably, the industry’s highest priced stock.

CEO, GTBank, Olusegun Agbaje
The managing director/CEO of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), Olusegun J.K. Agbaje, is rated as one of the country’s highest paid CEOs. His GTB prides itself as “the biggest and most profitable bank in Nigeria” and one of the biggest companies on the shores of West Africa. Agbaje co-founded the GTB in 1990 with Tayo Aderinokun who died in 2011.His annual take-home is a whopping N77m.
Before assuming the current position, Agbaje was the deputy managing director of the bank between August 2002 and April 20, 2011. He has also served as the divisional head of the bank’s institutional banking division and also as acting MD of GTB (Ghana) Limited, from April 20, 2011.

Interestingly, Agbaje has served in a number of capacities before becoming the man at the helm of the bank’s affairs. He was, at different points in his career; member, Assets and Liability Management Committee; member, Criticised Assets Committee; member, Board, Information Technology Strategy Committee and member, Board, Risk Management Committee.

On his way to the top, Agbaje also served as member, board, Human Resources and Nomination Committee; member, Management Risk Committee and member, Management Credit Committee.  Experience garnered from serving in these committees helped, in no small measure, in preparing him for the current position of CEO.

CEO, Oando Plc, Jubril Adewale Tinubu
According to recent financial reports, the second highest paid CEO in the oil sector is Wale Tinubu, with a total annual remuneration of N69m, an equivalent of N189, 041 per day.
Tinubu is the group chief executive of the company which has been hailed as Africa’s leading indigenous energy solutions provider listed on the stock exchange in Nigeria and Johannesburg. Tinubu also has a record of long-time service, having served on the board of various blue-chip companies as chairman and director.
His outstanding performance has won him several awards, among which are; Africa’s Business Leader of the Year awarded by the African Business Magazine and the Commonwealth Council on the basis of his contributions to the development of the African oil and gas sector in 2010. He won the same accolade in 2011, courtesy of the African Investor.

These accolades are proof that Tinubu’s ascension to the pinnacle of the administrative ladder in Oando was no fluke but a function of his doggedness and hard-work. Tinubu also holds key positions in a number of major financial institutions.

CEO, Forte Oil Plc, Akin Akinfemiwa
Forte Oil Plc. (formally African Petroleum Plc.) is a foremost indigenous major marketer of refined petroleum products with strong presence in the 36 states of the federation and Abuja. According to recent reports, as its group chief executive officer, Akinfemiwa’s annual salary is N64m (N175, 342 per day).

Prior to this appointment, Akinfemiwa had a successful career in the banking sector. He served as the CEO of Sky Bank Plc, until July 31, 2010. His expertise covers a range of areas, including; strategic planning and management, corporate banking, project financing, leadership and advisory services. He has also served as managing director/CEO of Prudent Bank.

Akinfemiwa has now brought his hard-work to bear on the fortunes of Forte Oil Plc. The public liability company which is quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) has over 500 dealer-assisted and dealer-developed retail outlets spread across the country.

CEO, UBA, Phillips Oduoza
Phillips Oduoza is the chief executive officer, group managing director, and an executive director of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc. He is one of the highest paid CEOs in the banking sector, with an annual remuneration of N57m (as at 2010). It suffices to say that Oduoza is one of the few who can beat their chest in fulfilment of a banking career.

He became the CEO and managing director of the bank in August 2010 and has served as its deputy managing director (South) from the 2005. Besides having the honour of having gained monumental experience from working across different banks for more than 20 years, he has served also as the bank’s executive director of Retail Financial Services. UBA’s fortune, no doubt, has snow-balled, with results from his professional services and investment of talents as proof.

His services in the bank cut across membership of the board risk committee and financial and general purpose committee. Before assuming the position of CEO, he served as deputy managing director of the bank. Among many other designations, he was an executive director of the defunct Standard Trust Bank (STB) which was acquired by the UBA in the thick of the consolidation exercise introduced by the then-governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.

CEO, Ecobank Nigeria, Jubril Aku
According to a Banks’ Financial Transparency report, as at 2009, the bank ranked second on the list of highest paid bank CEOs in Nigeria, with N88m per annum as salary for its CEO. But the bank reportedly slashed the CEO’s emolument to N38m per annum, perhaps, as a measure against financial stress.

Jubril Aku is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Ecobank Nigeria Plc. He has been its managing director since March 2010. Aku served as acting treasurer, Citibank, Tanzania and as country treasurer, Citibank Nigeria Plc.

He began his banking career in 1979 with the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc., where he worked for three years from September, 1986 to December, 1989. He served at the Continental Merchant Bank Plc., where he worked as a credit and investment analyst.
Aku has served in various capacities with different financial institutions and is, by all standards, an accomplished banker.

Au’s academic brilliance has earned him several accolades, among which are the First Bank of Nigeria Plc Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Banking and Finance at the Ahmadu Bello University, from where he graduated with honours in 1986.

CEO, Zenith Bank, Godwin Emefiele
The CEO and group managing director of Zenith Bank Plc, Godwin Emefiele, is also one of the highest paid CEOs of Nigerian companies. Emefiele succeeded the pioneer CEO of the bank, Jim Ovia, in August 2010. By his current position in the bank’s hierarchy and the number of branches it can bboast of within the country and in West Africa, it is evident that Emefiele is fulfilled.

Prior to his choice of banking as a career in Zenith Bank, Emefiele was a lecturer in University of Nigeria and University of Port Harcourt where he taught Finance, Bank Management and Insurance. However, he later left the academia for banking. He joined Zenith as a pioneer staff over 22 years ago and has proved his worth in advancing the bank as well as increasing its fortunes and profitability. In 2001, he was appointed deputy managing director before succeeding Ovia three years ago.

He has also served as member of Executive Committee, member of Board Credit Committee, member of Staff Matters, Finance and General Purpose Committee and member of Board Risk Management Committee.  Emefiele’s services and impact were also felt in Management Global Credit Committee, Risk Management committee, Assets and Liabilities Committee and Information Technology Steering Committee where he served as member.

The advancements made by the bank are not without the inputs of Emefiele who served as executive director in charge of corporate banking. He as well served in the treasury, financial control and strategic planning department. He has been in the management team of Zenith Bank from its inception.

Nigerians Lambasted again by US Journalist For Dark-Side of Obamacare

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

Weeks after a US Senator insulted Nigerians in a bid to mock Obamacare website glitch, another piece has been written, this time by journalist Ann Coulter. In an article titled, 'to speak to a Nigerian Prince about your healthcare, press '1' now', Ann basically says criminals are running the Obamacare website and most of them Nigerians.

Continue
Her article is quite offensive...excerpts below...This week we found out that the tens of thousandsof "navigators" hired by the government to enroll people in Obamacare will include convicted felons.Despite some "navigators" having already been exposed as having arrest warrants against them, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has no plans to screen out the criminals.

The problem isn't their complexion, it's their culture. In America, we think only dumb people become criminals. That's not true in the Third World!Nigeria, for example, leads the world in criminal enterprises. Every level of Nigerian society is criminal, with the smart ones running Internet scams, the mid-range ones running car theft rings, and the stupid ones engaging in piracy and kidnapping. At the University of Lagos, you can major in credit card fraud.

There were almost no Nigerians in the United States until the 1970s. Today, there are nearly 250,000 Nigerians in the U.S. (committing the cyber-crime Americans just won't do!). In 2011, we took in more immigrants from Nigeria than from the United Kingdom (9,246 from the U.K. and 9,344 from Nigeria

CBN Classifies 8 Nigerian Banks As TBTF "Too Big To Fail"

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 14 November 2013 0 komentar

First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTBank), Zenith Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA), Access Bank Plc, Skye Bank Plc, Ecobank Nigeria and Diamond Bank Plc have been designated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as “too big to fail”, owing to the fact that their failure could pose a systemic risk to the banking industry and the larger economy.

Continue

The eight banks alone account for 75 per cent of the banking sector in terms of earnings, profitability assets, customer deposits and branch networks.

The CBN, it was learnt, has therefore adopted a more robust regulatory regime to monitor and scrutinise the eight banks, in order to ensure that they are healthy.

The central bank has also asked the eight banks to increase their capital base in order to give them a buffer against internal and exogenous shocks.

Confirming this development, Deputy Governor (Operations), CBN, Mr. Tunde Lemo, described the financial institutions as systemically important because of their size.

Lemo pointed out that any bank that accounts for five per cent of the banking system is systemically important.

“What that means is that we have to take a closer look at them. It doesn’t mean that they are weak, it is just that we have to focus more attention on them because, God forbid, if something happens to any of them, it may affect the entire system,” Lemo said.

Asked about the capital base that the respective banks are expected to have, the CBN deputy governor said: “It is not that they were asked to raise their capital base, it is just that when an institution is designated as systemically important, it is required to have more capital.”

For Zenith Bank, its recently released results for nine months ending September 30, 2013 showed that its profit after tax stood at N64 billion with loans and advances of N1.1 trillion. The bank also reported gross earnings of N255 billion at the end of September 2013, up by 11 per cent from the N229 billion recorded in the corresponding period in 2012.

Zenith Bank’s total market capitalisation on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) stood at N675.024 billion yesterday.

Also, GTBank’s profit after tax stood at N69.24 billion at the end of September 2013, as against N63.734 billion earned in the same period in 2012. GTBank’s total assets also stood at N1.875 trillion, compared to the N1.73 trillion as at December 2012. Its share price on the NSE closed at N25.99 per share yesterday, giving it a market capitalisation of N764.916 billion.

In the same vein, UBA’s unaudited results for the nine months ending September 30, 2013 also revealed that its profit after tax climbed to N37.37 billion. With a market capitalisation of N257.255 billion on the NSE, its share price closed at N7.80 per share.

For Access Bank, its recently released unaudited nine-month results showed gross earnings of N154 billion at the end of September 2013. Its profit before tax also stood at N35 billion. Access Bank’s market capitalisation on the NSE was N213.269 billion yesterday, while its shares closed at N9.32 per share.

Skye Bank Plc’s gross earnings rose to N102 billion at the end of September 2013, while its profit after tax stood at N11.650 billion.
Diamond Bank also posted a profit before tax of N25.6 billion, while its total assets stood at N1.377 trillion at the end of September 2013.

First Bank of Nigeria Limited is yet to release its third quarter results because of its holding company structure

Dairy of a Nigerian Student

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 13 November 2013 0 komentar
Dairy of a Nigerian Student was written by one of our readers; Nworgu Uchenna.

Lazily rising from my sleep with strained eyes and a big sigh, numbness rapidly disappearing from my fingers and toes, I roll over and curl up more tightly, hugging my knees between my arms. Its yet another new day. I am a young lad but my fears and worries are that of a Christmas goat awaiting slaughter.
Continue

My school identity card says 2009-2013 but I know that with the way things are going I may not graduate till well into 2015. That is if I am not dead by then, blown away by a bomb, shot down by the police or even beaten to death by a violent legislator. I sound very pessimistic and gloomy, it's not my fault. The situation at hand has killed my enthusiasm and that of millions of students of government-owned tertiary institutions.

News of an impending strike started trickling into our ears around late June and we shrugged it off as one of those things, 'normal ASUU wahala' which would be resolved in no time. Alas, our joy was shortlived in the first week of July when a communiqué was issued confirming the strike action. Students living in far places were confronted with the sad fact that they may yet again have to risk their lives to return home as this strike was actually happening.

Thank God for my Industrial Training, Facebook, and of course Twitter, I won't have to end up idle or exposed to extrajudicial killing. As ironic as this may sound, the combination of some of these 3 facilities, if not more has being responsible for maintaining the sanity of millions of Nigerian students sitting down at home idle and frustrated. So many students are spending virtually this period of strike "facebooking" and tweeting, chatting, visiting friends and just doing anything to kill the boredom.

When two elephants fight, what shall become of the grass? Question for the gods, maybe. No one knows when ASUU will be calling off the strike. How I wish the government and ASUU sheath their swords and pity our plights. How I wish the government pays more attention to funding of universities and investment in human resources.

How I wish ASUU compromises a bit and comes down to reasonable agrrement. All we here everyday is meeting upon meeting, negotiations. To make matters worse, ASUU seems to have pulled out of negotiations and the government itself is concentrating fully on political brouhaha, domestic violence, and Boko Haram issue in no particular order. Well I will not digress into the details of it all, after all what do I know?

All I know is that when I resume back to school (only God knows whenever that is) *sad face*, austerity measures might have to take its place in favour of my usual philanthropic nature. Economic meltdown has taken a rather harsh toll on my dad's finance consequently affecting my own meagre share; it means no more generosity with my belongings.

We are been told ubiquitously to pray.

"Pray for your family. Pray for your country. Pray for the whole world." So we are praying or at least I have being praying. Even with my deep pessimism and sarcasm, there's still one tiny voice in my head telling me that things will work out fine. I have survived worse. But for now its back to tweeting, chatting and hustling, at least these ones have not decided to strike yet.

Indian Deadly attack: FG summons envoy, threatens retaliation, demands apology.

Posted by Unknown Senin, 11 November 2013 0 komentar
Federal Government has demanded an unreserved apology from the Indian authorities over the death of a Nigerian, Obodo Simeon and discriminatory attacks on Nigerians afterwards.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, said this while answering questions from journalists at the Pre-Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting press briefing in Abuja on Monday.

Tensions between Nigerians and Indians have escalated since Simeon was found dead in Goa, a popular tourist destination in the country’s west. Simeon, according to reports, was stabbed to death on October 31 in Panaji, Goa state’s capital.

About 200 angry members of the Nigerian community were said to have blocked a highway while the body was being taken for post-mortem. Police reportedly brought the situation under control and registered cases of rioting, arson and damaging public property against 51 Nigerians and one Ghanaian.

Onwuliri, who emphasised that Nigeria would not tolerate any act of unruly behaviour from its citizens, however, said the conduct of Indian authorities was unacceptable. She told journalists that the Acting Head of Mission of India in Nigeria had been summoned to her office to explain the situation.

 She said,

“Actuall,y the growing violence around the countries should be a thing of worry for member states and for us in Nigeria too. We have continued to condemn violence especially against Nigerians in different states. The recent one in India is really a big one to worry about and I have summoned the acting head of Indian Mission to admonish him on what had happened to our citizens.
“The young man was coming back from lunch. They said there was a clash between two communities, he was not part of them but he went in for it! We have also asked for unreserved apology from India. We have asked them to ensure that full-fledged investigations are carried out so that perpetrators of that act will be brought to book.”

A 46-year-old woman, Mrs. Eunice Titilayo Ogundele, has been murdered after allegedly being r*ped by yet to be identified persons, at Igede Ekiti, weekend. According to the husband of the deceased, Mr. Michael Ogundele, his wife left home in the early hours of Friday for a church service at her pastor’s residence.

He said she was allegedly hit with a pestle on the head by her assailants on the way. “Yesterday (Thursday) which was a market day, she went to the market and returned home to rest. “This morning (Friday), we went our different ways after I opened the door a little after five o’clock. She left for an early morning church service at her pastor’s residence.

“We went our separate ways at Igede-Ado road. I did not know I was seeing her for the last time. Few minutes to six they called me to come to somewhere in the town. I went and met my wife dead with two deep wounds on her head,” Mr Ogundele said amid tears.

10 People lost their lives , Nursing Mom Survives As commuter Bus Plunges Into River In Bayelsa

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
A road mishap in Bayelsa State has led to the deaths of no less than 10 persons after a commuter bus plunged into a river around the Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of the state.

According to reports, the bus plunged into the Okoso river along the Kaiama-Sampou stretch of the East-West road at around 8.30pm on Saturday.

The accident resulted after the bus, which was reportedly over-speeding, tried to overtake another vehicle and instead somersaulted and ended up in the river.

According to Vanguard Newspaper reports though there were conflicting reports about the causality figure, while some claimed 10 persons lost their lives in the accident, others said seven corpses were recovered by local divers and sympathizers.

It was gathered that most of the occupants of the ill-fated passenger bus were women and children.

A commercial bus driver, Mr. Emmanuel Eziya, told Vanguard that the ill-fated 18-seater bus was conveying passengers to Yenagoa from a traditional marriage ceremony at Oginigbo in Ughelli South Local Government of Delta State.

He said the bus which was on high speed somersaulted and plunged into the river while attempting to overtake another vehicle on the narrow road.

He said: “Though the river is not too deep, only those who knew how to swim were involved in the rescue operation.”

Can Nigeria fight the war on terror alone ? ( Do we Need External Help and what are the pros and cons ?)

Posted by Unknown Minggu, 10 November 2013 0 komentar
SIX months after the Federal Government declared a state of emergency in three North-Eastern states of the federation in order to end the Boko Haram terror campaign, Nigerians have yet to heave a sigh of relief from the activities of the terrorists. Although there was a lull in terror attacks at the initial stage of the military operation against the insurgents, recent attacks by the religious extremists have led to significant loss of lives and property.
Continue

The insurgents seem to have become bolder, carrying out daring attacks against security agents and military formations, especially in Borno and Yobe states. With President Goodluck Jonathan’s extension of the state of emergency for another six months, efforts must be stepped up to contain the insurgents to sustain the initial success recorded.
The development calls for an urgent review of strategy. Nigeria can no longer afford the arrogance of fighting terrorism all alone while the international community wallows in the ignorance of linking the Boko Haram terrorist campaign to mass poverty or the elite’s struggle for control of oil wealth.  Boko Haram has become a magnet for jihadists from other countries who share a common poisonous ideology.

There is increasing evidence that international jihadists are actively participating in Boko Haram’s deadly attacks. According to the military, many of the insurgents were recruited from neighbouring countries such as Niger Republic, Chad, Cameroon, and even Mali, which are said to have supplied about 2,000 recruits to the Boko Haram cause.

As they did in Mali when Islamist fighters linked to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb ruled a big swathe of northern Mali, dividing the country into two, the overall objective of Boko Haram’s terror campaign is to turn part of Northern Nigeria to a haven for Islamist terrorists. President Goodluck Jonathan therefore got it right when he declared in Israel that
“combating the menace of terrorism is a challenge that we must address in partnership with all peace-loving countries and peoples of the world.”

There is no doubt that Africa is the new theatre in the global war against terrorism. For a long time, the United States had considered the Horn of Africa – Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somalia, Eritrea and Sudan – the major source of global terrorism in Africa. Not anymore. A better part of African continent, with Nigeria as the epicentre, has now been seized by Islamists.

A Global Terrorism Database released by a US organisation, the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism, lists Boko Haram among the top five group perpetrators of terrorism in the world after the Maoists (India); the Taliban (Afghanistan); and al-Shabaab (Somalia). Sudan has been a training hub and safe haven for members of several of the more violent international terrorist and radical Islamist groups.
Since the September 21 Kenya Westgate mall attack that killed about 70 people, world leaders have been calling for a coordinated response to terrorist attacks in Africa. It is established that Islamists are able to take advantage of porous borders, weak central governments, under-trained armed forces, and flourishing drug trades. The two US raids in Libya and Somalia last month that resulted in the capture of a terrorist on the most-wanted list highlight al-Qaeda’s growing terror network on the continent.

Following the operations, the US Secretary of State, John Kerry, claimed that terrorists “can run but they can’t hide.” All this serves as a stark reminder that the threat of terrorism anywhere in the world affects everyone and should not be left for one government alone to handle.

This is the stark reality Nigeria must face. The Nigerian authorities have to forge a good network with other countries to fight a common enemy.  The Boko Haram-created instability is telling on the people and the economy. Thousands of people in the North-East region have fled their homes, taking refuge in neighbouring countries. The insurgency is not only harming the local economy of the North-East, but that of the entire country.

Many governments have since issued travel alerts to warn their nationals against visiting Nigeria. “The issue of security scares some people and impacts negatively on our results,” says Goodie Ibru, President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

A major problem that has to be dealt with is that of the porous border between Nigeria and Niger Republic. For example, an urgent action has to be taken on how to curtail illegal movement of massive and sophisticated arms on this 1,500 kilometre-long border between the two neighbours. Furthermore, Nigeria has to step up its intelligence gathering and sharing with these countries, so as to understand the modus operandi of the foreign recruits, stopping them at their countries of origin before they enter Nigeria.
We urgently need an internationally-backed anti-terror strategy. As the President said, there is no doubt that Israel has had decades of experience in combating terrorism and Nigeria can benefit tremendously from its experience.  But Jonathan should go beyond rhetoric by securing concrete assistance from other countries with wealth of experience in fighting terrorism. Modern equipment to fight the scourge and training of security officials should be part of our focus. The top hierarchy of Boko Haram must be decimated.

Four persons, including a yet-to-be identified soldier, have been killed in a robbery attack on Skye Bank branch at Alaba Market, Lagos State.  The incident, which took place last Tuesday, was said to have occurred around 6pm, while money was being transferred from the branch, which serves as a cash point, to a major branch in the area.
An eyewitness on the condition of anonymity reveals, that the robbers arrived at the scene on a motorcycle. He said, “There were two men on the bike and they both wore masks. The motorcycle rider, however did not wear mask.

“As of the time the robbers came, money was being moved from the cash point to the other branch. The money was packed in a Ghana-must-go bag. A soldier was waiting to accompany the person that would carry the bags as was the custom. “The employee of the bank carried the bag on his head; the soldier was with him. Nigeria spent ₦1.05 trillion on imported cars last year — Automotive

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Nigeria spent about N1.05 trillion last year on importation of vehicles and spare parts, while its local car assembly plants suffered monumental loss in patronage, according to the Director General of the National Automotive Council (NAC), Alhaji Aminu Jalal.

Meanwhile, the Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria (PAN), which produced 90,000 cars in 1985, and had about 4,000 permanent employees, now produces about 3,000 vehicles annually with 250 staff, its Managing Director, Alh. Ibrahim Boyi, said.

However, the Chairman, Board of NAC, Alh. Abdulkadir Saleh has promised that NAC would ensure implementation of the new automotive policy to ensure government’s patronage of locally assembled cars.
These revelations were made, yesterday, when an eight-member Board of NAC toured the 40-year old PAN in Kakuri, Kaduna.

The tour showed PAN has made a lot of remodelling of its old facilities, building the state-of-the-art workshop and importing sundry machines and equipment as its engineers and technicians simultanesuly assembled Peugeot 307 models and Changan Alsvin Sedans.

Fielding questions from reporters after the tour, the DG of NAC, Jalal, said: “I want to tell you that last year alone, this country spent N550 billion on importation of cars, buses and trucks. That does not include tractors, and military vehicles. Again, we also spent around N500 billion on spare parts. In fact, on tyres alone, we spent N150 billion. And this year, the same trend is showing.

“This is not good for our country. With the new policy, we are going to support our car plants to produce very standard cars at globally competitive prices. This is going to greatly add to our local content. For example, to assemble a car here, you need about 2,500 parts. If many cars are produced and sold here, it would encourage the local manufacturing of these parts, creating more wealth here and driving down the cost of vehicles. By the time we start implementing this policy, you will see a very impressive positive change in just six months.

On his part, MD of PAN said: “In the mid-‘80s and early ‘90s, we were doing very well. In 1985, we produced 90,000n cars. Government policy was very favourable then. But after that the environment became very bad as all kinds of vehicles started coming into the country. Today, we produce between 25 and 30 cars only during working days. Our workforce of 4000 in the ‘80s is just now 250. We are hoping that the situation will change, because we have put in every modern facility, and forged the right international technical partnership to succeed”.

Nigeria now Manufacturing armoured vehicles

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 09 November 2013 0 komentar
AS interest in armoured luxury vehicles increases among top class , some Nigerian vehicle firms have  intensified study work on the armouring technology. Presently, an indigenous car manufacturer, Proforce Limited , has started the manufacturing of Armoured Personnel Carriers.  Proforce claimed it'd closed a pact with Defence Industries Firm and some para-military organisations for the production.
Continue after the break.

The Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, happens to be facing complaint for allegedly making the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority to purchase two armoured vehicles for her. Rich Nigerians and prime public office holders import numerous armoured vehicles.

The Controlling Manager, Proforce, Mr. Ade  Ogundeyin, claimed in a record received on Friday that his company was presently working together with the Defence Industries on the APCs, just as he distressed it was equipped to shield different types of vehicles.  He criticised the idea of importing armoured cars, saying it did not make financial sense for Nigerians to continue to transfer the thing that was accessible locally.

“There is no need for government or anybody to import bulletproof or armoured vehicles. It is a waste of resources.
“Why import at very high cost when there is capacity to produce better vehicles at comparatively lower prices locally? This is an issue I hope the new auto policy will address.”

“LG’s new Mosquito Away Air Conditioner delivers true comfort to Nigerian consumers,” said Mr. Junhwa Jeong, General Manager, Air-conditioning and Energy Solutions, LG Electronics West Africa Operations.“It comes with powerful cooling and extreme durability, this product is more than a match for the country’s challenging weather conditions. Better still, it incorporates ultrasonic wave technology, which effectively repels mosquitoes. We are confident that the Mosquito Away air conditioner will meet the needs of consumers in this important African market.”

Immediately apparent from its name, the Mosquito Away is designed to aid in the fight against mosquitoes. In Peety Grady Chamber tests, the Mosquito Away proved its effectiveness by knocking down 64 percent of female Anopheles mosquitoes within 24 hours, and repelling 82 percent overall. The air conditioner emits ultrasonic waves that disrupt the mosquito’s sensory cells and cause paralysis, confusion and often death. This technology is completely harmless to humans as it has been recognized to be clean and safe. The effectiveness of LG’s product has been certificated by the University of Ibadan’s College of Medicine, and the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON).

Also speaking in the same vein, Managing Director, Fouani Nigeria Limited, Mr. Mohammed Fouani said: “For us at LG Electronics, we are committed to making available to our customers inventive and innovative products that enable them enjoy everyday life. This, we have once more demonstrated through the launch of the LG Mosquito Away Air Conditioner.
“LG is committed to helping Africa achieve a better future. We hope to accomplish this by investing more in research and development as well as supporting initiatives that will put smiles on the faces of the African populace.”

Conveniently, the Mosquito Away function can be turned on independently of cooling; helping to prevent unnecessary energy usage. When strong cooling is needed, the Jet Cool function and the product’s large, efficient fan deliver an increased volume of airflow. Due to the unstable nature of the Nigerian power grid, LG has implemented the Low Voltage Starter (LVS). This practical feature enables the affordably priced Mosquito Away to operate continuously, even at lower voltage.

The LG Mosquito Away air conditioner is specifically built for the Africa market with Comprehensive Auto Cleaning function which prevents bacteria and mold from forming inside the heat exchanger. This helps to create hygienic and odor-free atmosphere.

With the introduction of this, LG Electronics has once more demonstrated that it is dedicated to churning out ground-breaking products that addresses the peculiar needs of its teeming consumers.
