Wizkid is not a threat – Davido

Posted by Unknown Kamis, 31 Oktober 2013 0 komentar

Davido is one artiste who sure knows how to blow his own trumpet. But, who won't, when one has certain things going on well for oneself or when 'the lines have fallen unto pleasant places' as the Psalmist says. A rich father, a successful career which is barely three years old, a multi-million naira endorsement deal, sold-out concerts, a string of hits, a personal home, an enviable fleet of cars and a growing fan base – Davido boast all at the moment.
At 20, he has no doubt garnered what has taken many artistes years to achieve, that is, if God and mother-luck shines generously on them.
Ever since he drew the attention of millions of music fans to himself when he introduced himself as 'Omo baba olowo' in his 2011 hit song titled 'Dami duro', there has been no looking back for the singer, who says he is currently a part time student at Babcock University, Ilishan Remo.
"Everything is just God because I just wanted to do music, be happy and comfortable but He just turned my fortunes around and I thank Him for that," he quips.
For some established artistes, fame and wealth can be a tad difficult to manage. But for Davido, it's been a tough call especially since he has achieved both at a young age.
"Even though I have fame, money and other things working for me, I didn't expect to be this big. I find it sometimes overwhelming that I am immediately recognised wherever I go and it is such a great feeling, that sometimes I feel like the president. I miss partying at the club with my friends, but at the same time I am happy because this is what I have always wanted to do," he says.
No stranger to controversies and online scandals, Davido, admits that despite being a celebrity, he isn't immune to general life issues.
"No doubt I have made some mistakes and I am not perfect. You know, sometimes I get overwhelmed or annoyed. I am a human being too, people have to understand that before they are quick to judge my actions," he admits.
The Nigerian music scene has become a lot more competitive with various artistes emerging and others bowing out of the scene after a hit. Davido considers himself an authority in his own right. His reason? "I'm not afraid of competition or the fact that some person will just appear on the scene and take the shine. After all, I did it to some people, so I expect that it is something that must happen to everyone because you can't be shining forever. But once you are good to others, make good music, have loyal fans, that's all that matters."
Not one to throw in the towel so soon, the 20-year old singer appears to have his future plans all sorted out, already. "I have plans to go into oil and gas business with my elder brother next year. I want to do music for 10 years. By that time, I will be 30, and free to rest. Some people are just starting out at 30 but I am already a success and threat at 20. Fame at a young age is a plus because I still have like 10 years to ball while some people are just starting at 27 and 30."
So, is Wizkid not a threat or music rival? To this, he says, "Not at all. The rumour is cool. But I see nobody as competition or threat. God is behind me, so I just go into the studio, do my music and everything is fine. I develop and write most of my songs in the studio."
It is almost impossible to have a chat with Davido and not ask about how much influence his father has had on his career. After all, he says it for all who care to listen that he is a rich kid.
In an unapologetic tone, he says, "Yes my father is rich, but the truth is some people only knew who he was after I released my song, 'Omo Baba Olowo'. I want people to know that the song was not a hit because of my father but because it was dope. I didn't sing 'OBO' because of my father's wealth – contrary to what people think."
The singer, who developed an interest in music at age 13, also admits that he enjoys a very cordial relationship with his father, despite his busy nature.
Amidst laughter, he says, "My father and family always keep me grounded. They call me from time to time to ask about my welfare. My father actually visits all these blogs to read and see all my nonsense. Just like the typical Yoruba father, he scolds me and whenever he does that, I will say, 'Daddy cool down, what's going on, relax.' Although he is also very proud of me, he is scared and happy for me at the same time."
A few weeks back, the video for his hit song,Skelewu, was met with mixed reactions and this did not go down well with the singer. He says, "The song is big already; so whatever we do people are still going to talk anyway. I shot the video like a movie and there are three videos, so people can watch whichever one they want.
"If you don't like the instructional video, you can watch Sesan's, if you don't like that one; you can watch Moe Musa's. If people want, I will shoot one more video, it's not easy."
Although the lad admits that he has taken the criticisms in good faith, his countenance betrays him, so does his response, he says, "When the first video leaked they said they didn't like it. Everyone knew that we were about to shoot, and he (Sesan), had the video. So it may not be him that leaked it. But we have since apologised to his camp and everybody.

22 Lagos pupils faint after inhaling gas

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

There was confusion at Ogba Junior Grammar School, Lagos, on Thursday after about 22 pupils fell unconscious.
PUNCH Metrolearnt that the incident was caused by a gaseous substance emitting from a neighbouring laboratory, close to the school. The chemical was said to have engulfed the entire school.
When our correspondent visited the school premises, it was deserted. However, a security guard, who did not identify himself, said the incident occurred around 1pm.
He said, "I was just by the gate when I perceived this offensive smell. I quickly ran to a corner and covered my nose with my shirt.
"Pupils came running, saying some of their colleagues had fainted. When the smell subsided, teachers rallied around and rushed them to a hospital.
"I don't know the exact number of pupils affected but they were over 20. A few minutes later, emergency officials came around to attend to the victims."
Panic-stricken teachers reportedly fled in different directions, using clothes to cover their nostrils so as not to be affected by the foul smell.
Moments later, the teachers rushed four of the pupils to Blue Cross Hospital, Ijaiye Road, Ogba, Lagos, while the others were attended to by emergency officials.
PUNCH Metrolearnt that the rescue officials went around the compound in a bid to identify where the smell emanated from.
Our correspondent learnt that the odour was traced to Ogba Shopping Arcade, Ijaiye Road, which shares a fence with the affected school.
Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Razaq Fadipe, said it was discovered that a photo laboratory located in the complex was emitting the substance.
He said, "On getting to the school, 22 students were unconscious. LASAMBUS was able to revive most of them and their parents took them home.
"Four were not alright and had been taken to Blue Cross Hospital. We were able to trace the odour to the complex which shares a fence with the school.
"We spotted the laboratory where the smell was coming from and the place has been cordoned off. Investigations are still on."
When asked why it was only those in the school that were affected by the chemical, Fadipe said it was probably because the lab faced the school directly.
PUNCH Metrolearnt that the matter had been reported to the police while the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency had taken up the case.
An official of LASEPA, who wished to remain anonymous, said, "We will revisit the laboratory on Friday (today). If it is discovered that the laboratory was run illegally, then those running the place will be prosecuted.
"However, it is too soon to jump into conclusions; we will inform the public of our findings."
When our correspondent visited Blue Cross Hospital, a nurse on duty said the pupils had been revived and transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
"Four children were brought here and we were able to stabilise them before transferring them to LASUTH. We don't know the nature of the chemical they inhaled," she said.

‘She killed me, so I killed her’: Man stabs mistress to death after she tells him she has HIV.

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
A 37-year-old man who confessed to killing his mistress because she had HIV may have planned the attack, a court heard on Tuesday.

Larry Dunn stabbed Cicely Lee Bolden, 28, twice in the neck and left her to bleed to death in her southeast Oak Cliff, Dallas, apartment

Larry Dunn stabbed Cicely Lee Bolden, 28, twice in the neck and left her to bleed to death in her southeast Oak Cliff, Dallas, apartment last September after she told him she was infected.

Dunn initially told police he stabbed Bolden with a kitchen knife moments after they had unprotected sex and Bolden revealed her illness.

However new evidence presented at trial suggests the attack may not have been spontaneous.

Dallas Observer reported Bolden had told Dunn of her diagnosis a week before he killed her.

The court heard Dunn, believing he was infected and fearing he gave his wife HIV, went to his hairdresser girlfriend’s house seeking revenge.

They had unprotected sex one last time.

Then, while Bolden lay in bed, Dunn went to the kitchen, grabbed a steak knife, got back into bed and plunged the blade into Bolden’s neck, killing her.

‘In my mind, I’m already dead,’ Dunn told police at the time. ‘She killed me, so I killed her.’

Dunn faces up to life in prison if convicted.

His attorney, however, is trying to prove he acted with ‘sudden passion’, which carries a 20-year sentence.

More than a year after the couple had sex, Dunn still hasn’t been diagnosed with HIV. His lawyers say he is still undergoing tests.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most people develop a detectable amount of HIV antibodies between two to eight weeks of exposure.

Bolden’s body, which was naked from the waist down, was found by her son, seven, and daughter, eight, in their apartment.

The children ran out of the unit crying and screaming ‘my mama, my mama’, testified neighbor Latoya Arnett, who had called 911. The children now live separately with relatives.

Dunn initially denied killing Bolden, though he admitted that the two had sex that day. He also denied knowing that Bolden was HIV positive when Dallas police Detective Brian Tabor told him.

In a second interview, Dunn admitted what he had done, saying: ‘I was enraged, man…She knew she had HIV.’

He said Bolden didn’t struggle because ‘she wasn’t very strong.’

He also revealed he burned his clothes afterwards and dumped the knife in the garbage at a waffle house. Police later recovered the weapon.

‘I wanted to make her pay,’ Dunn said in the recorded interview, according to Dallas News. ‘Killing her wasn’t on the menu. That’s just how it ended up.’

The father of Cicely’s son, Jeff Busby, said that Bolden had contracted HIV within the last couple of years.

Speaking about Dunn, he said: ‘I hope he rots in prison. She [Bolden] did not deserve this.’

Stuffed teddy bear toys and candles were left outside Bolden’s boarded-up apartment in Highland Village Drive after the grisly murder.

Bayelsa State Govt Demolishes Gov. Dickson's Personal Home

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

Bayelsa State Government on Wednesday demolished a one-storey private building owned by Governor Seriake dickson because it obstructed the Right-of-Way as well as intruding on the state Capital City Master Plan.

Deputy Governor John Jonah told journalists that the location of the Governor’s house obstructed the Right-of-Way, hence there would be no compensation for him.
He said:
Continue

In line with the development control of the CCDA and urban renewal of the state, the government awarded contract for the dualisation of the road. Anyone who has built structures on the Right-of-Way should expect such buildings to be demolished.

One of the houses we have found to have interfered with the plan of Yenagoa is this one-storey structure belonging to the Governor.

On the advice of the CCDA that is concerned with development control of the state, the house was marked since last year for demolition. And you know we have awarded contract for the dualisation of the Opolo Road.”

However, some Yenagoa residents on Wednesday, according to Punch, claimed that only a section of dickson’s building was demolished, and that the exercise was a strategy to enable the government to demolish buildings of perceived opponents without causing public outrage.

Soyinka Advises President Jonathan On National Dialogue, says 'Justice Is Never Siddon Look'

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka has advised President Jonathan and the ruling elite to take into consideration some of the questions being raised about the National Dialogue exercise.

He spoke at a book launch in honour of the retiring President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isa Ayo Salami. The book a compendium of Salami’s judgments, is authored by Mrs. Funmi Quadri.
Continue
In his address entitled, “Justice is never siddon look,” Soyinka said there must be justice for all whether rich or poor.

He said: “I declare, I quote justice is the first foundation of humanity. At all times, law, even where it is temporary unskilled, emasculated, predominates, written or unwritten, law embodies the total will of the society Yes, law exercises an authority that transcends mere power. That is why we must task those whosoever is administrator of law with an ethical rigour, a measure that is paramount perhaps by only whatsoever the society expects of medical doctors who minister to the people’s physical and mental health or religious ministers who are preoccupied with the requirements of the spirit.

“Governors are blindly selective to what court orders they obey and President becomes completely deaf or blind to judicial orders.
“And that question is this: what is the role of the rest of us the in between humanity, Do we fold our hands and literarily siddon look? Most of the time it does appear that we have no option when justice appears to fail even his own immediate high echelon.”

He added: “Yes, many have warned, they have warned tirelessly and in various forms become deafened by the sound of their voice as it bounces back from the stones walls of a different complacency and sometimes criminality and complicity. The most notorious example of this today is of course the so called national conference.

“As many other propositions, the social context which is ever changing may provide avenue of fresh thinking but the stark truth is that all have been said cogently and relevantly.

“Those who think they can erect a future without first ridding the ground of the past debris flout against natural order or regeneration.”

The Nobel Laureate added: “Of all the conceivable negative baggage I can think of right now, the most pressing, I have always maintained, takes the form of a critical absence, subversion or suppression of – Justice.

“How have we fared, within this environment that most immediately sustains us – well, sort of? I shall evoke here one of the most notorious public profile cases of the serial degradations of Justice that seemingly shook this nation to its foundations. There are other cases we could cite – the murder of Dele Giwa for instance. Or Harry Marshall. Kudirat Abiola. Suliat Adedeji. A.K. Dikibo. Abukakar Rimi. Barnabas and Abigail Igwe, husband and wife, both officers of the law. Or Chief Dina – lest I stand accused of omitting my own homestead. Or indeed numerous others, so quickly relegated into the sump of unsolved cases.

My choice today, the main reference point for our sobering retrospection is however singularly apt. Despite his terminal absence, that preeminent victim shares with our celebrant, albeit in a tragic mode, the ironic symbolism of ‘Justice in Denial’, a role that interrogates both the very concept and operations of Justice, and also, the main structure for its delivery, which is – the Judiciary.

No one will question the seismic impact of the circumstances that took him from our midst, a dastardly deed which, as already claimed, shook the nation to its very foundations. However, the nation did not topple over – from all appearances. As we all know however, nations like the United States do not rest satisfied with appearances. Visible or not, internal damages – that very possibility – preoccupied the guardians of public monuments and safety.”

Nigeria Spends U.S.$13 Billion On Peacekeeping - Ex-Polish Envoy

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Abuja — FORMER Polish Ambassador to Nigeria, Grezgorz Walinski has said that Nigeria has spent about $13 billion on peacekeeping operations since 1960 and has also sent over 250,000 members of the Nigerian armed forces to the United Nation's sponsored missions worldwide.

Ambassador Walinski disclosed this at the stakeholders' dinner reception for the Nigeria Security Exhibition and Conference, 2014, organised by First Security Guards Limited in Abuja.
Continue after the break.

He noted that despite the numerous contributions of the country in peace operations, it was assumed that the country had not taken full advantage of its active participation in the numerous peace operations around the world by not getting commensurate economic, military and political remuneration for its participation.
He cited countries like Ghana that had also participated in numerous UN PSOs but generated funds through the process to defray the costs of sustaining its military, while Nigeria on the other hand had largely allegedly deprived itself of such benefits.

According to him, the country started peacekeeping operations few days after her independence in 1960 in Congo and since then, the country's forces have participated in many operations across the globe under varying international legal authority executing a variety of operational mandates.
He said: "Her contribution to the UN peacekeeping operations is only surpassed by those of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Over 250,000 members of the Nigerian armed forces have participated in UN sponsored missions worldwide."

"Having been involved in 40 of the 55 peacekeeping missions of the UN, Nigeria has now participated in 73 percent of all UN peacekeeping operations. Four of these missions have been commanded by Nigeria senior military officers. Nigeria currently has about 6, 000 peacekeepers in various flashpoints, 4, 000 of which are in Darfur, Sudan," he stated.
The former Polish Ambassador to Nigeria further said that many potential conflicts were effectively prevented due to Nigerian diplomacy. Therefore, Nigeria's direct involvement as chief mediator in a number of territorial disputes and crises effectively allowed to avoid them and in consequence eliminated the threat of their development into full-scale conflicts.

Ambassador Walinski noted that the international community was getting fatigued and increasingly reluctant to intervene in Africa's conflicts, adding,
"During last two decades, we witnessed gradual but inevitable shift from foreign intervention carried on by European military contingents to establishments and strengthening of Africa's own capability to prevent, to monitor and to resolve crises which inevitably will erupt."

He said that the country was faced with myriads of security challenges but added that the
"Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Viola Onwuliri has assured the international community that Nigeria would continue to work in the area of preventive diplomacy."
He said the main problem of the country was terrorism, though it would not change the country's position as regional leader, stressing that the country had always succeeded in learning from her experiences and making her experiences the source of even greater power.

He also said that the idea of organizing the security exhibition at the FCT was important as it served as a forum where all actors both state and private sectors and those that have the right to use power and those who can supply them with the products would come together and discuss security matters and also proffer solutions.

Speaking earlier, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of First Security Guards who also is the chief organizer of NISEC, 2014, Frank Ohwafa said the reception was organized to bring together all stakeholders in preparation for the 2014 Nigeria Security Exhibition and Conference, NISEC, homeland security show.

Ohwafa said First Security Guards had in the past collaborated with other security agencies in areas of capacity building and competence needed in an ever changing environment to fight and combat crime and criminality.

"In year 2007, First Security Guards signed a partnership with the Nigeria Police to train and retrain her personnel in contemporary policing and crime fighting," he stated and commended the National Security Adviser for using his office and appointment to promote peace and security, enduring lasting security platforms for better coordination of the security agencies.

GUS: Dennis Okike is the 10th Ultimate champion!

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar

The most anticipated answer to who will be the ultimate Champion has been provided for fans of the Gulder Ultimate Search (GUS) reality TV show as Dennis Okike emerge the winner of GUS season 10.
Dennis Okike has emerged the 10th Ultimate Champion. He outsmarted Dr.Edmund Umeabuani and Ifunanya Onike in the waters of Usaka River, Akwa-Ibom State where the final battle among the warriors fervently seeking for the 10th symbol took place. On the final day of the search, the warriors got a message from the Council of Elders ordering them to pack their bags and make their ways to where they draw water. Chidi awaited them and gave them the next set of instructions.
The final task was to search for the 10th Symbol. To do that, each of them would make use of a clue which would take them to two different locations to retrieve two pieces of the map that would lead to where the 10th Symbol was buried. Another clue at their first locations would direct them to the next location.
It was a race against time and the last man to the next location was evicted. Edmund and Ifunanya's first clue led them to the Place of the Talking Drum to retrieve the first map piece; while Bobby and Dennis went to the Mud Field. Subsequently, Bobby and Dennis headed to the Place of the Talking Drum for their second piece while Edmund and Ifunanya raced to the Mud
Field. Edmund returned first, followed by Ifunanya. Dennis edged Bobby out of the quest when he beat him to the finish line. Bobby was instantly evicted.
With their maps pieced together, the remaining warriors had all they needed to proceed to find the Sceptre. On their maps three spots were marked 'X' as possible places the 10th Symbol was buried. Ifunanya was in the lead, having figured out the direction first. However her first attempt at crossing the river with the aid of a rope saw her falling into the water while Edmund and Dennis moved on.
Edmund arrived first and headed straight to one of the spots marked on the map and began his search. Dennis joined shortly. Ifunanya had barely stepped in the river when Dennis raised what turned out to be a false alarm. All he had was a piece of debris laying under the river. The protracted search had the warriors glancing at their maps intermittently as Dennis kept digging up dirt after dirt from the river.
After many futile efforts Dennis eventually dug up the Sceptre from under a slant palm tree in the river and thereby ended the long search for the 10th symbol. He was instantly inducted into the order of Heroes as the 10th Ultimate Man by Chidi Mokeme, the Anchor-man.
For his feat, Dennis will win N10 million and a brand new Mitsubishi Pajero 3.0L GLS AT( full Option) courtesy of CFAO Motors Nigeria, the official automotive partners of Gulder Ultimate Search 10. For emerging the last female contestant standing, Ifunanya is already guaranteed N1 million in addition to her prize money.
In the same vein, Kalu Kalu, a final year student of Industrial Mathematics in the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, has emerged as the first winner of the first ever fans edition of Gulder Ultimate Search. The fans edition of Gulder Ultimate Search was hosted by Bob Manuel Udokwu. Gulder gave fans and viewers of the show a chance to compete in Nigeria's first 100 per cent local content reality TV show from the comfort of their homes.

Photos: Why 25 Students, 2 Teachers Lapsed In to Coma At Ogba Junior Grammar School.

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Ogba, Lagos State -- Twenty-five students and two teachers of Ogba Junior Grammar School lapsed into coma after inhaling fumes of toxic chemicals discharged into drainage. The unconscious victims were transferred  to the Blue Cross Hospital, and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

The story continues after the Jump Break.
The students and teachers were inside the school building when they started complaining of feeling dizzy. Soon, people started collapsing, apparently after inhaling the emission from chemicals spread to their school premises by air.

The incident, which occured at around 12.40p.m., caused panic among the school staff, and saw some parents rushing to the scene.

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) official told journalists all the victims were in critical condition, but responded to treatment.

The state also stated that, upon coming to the scene, the LASEMA team conducted a broad assessment. Consequently, it was revealed that certain liquid chemicals with offensive and choking odour were stored and found in the photo lab on the initial floor of Ogba Shopping Mall, located at the trunk of the school. The toxic fumes permeated the environmental surroundings, and this have resulted in the incident.
According to the official, the chemicals in the lab might have expired. The premises have now been sealed by the authorities, and three photo studio staff memebers arrested.
A thorough investigation could be carried out to ascertain the consequence that the liquid chemicals have on the environment.
The State Director of Fire and Safety Services, Mr. Rasaq Fadipe, said officials assisted the rescue operations to prevent the spread of chemical fumes. The premises have now been sealed to stop people from gaining use of the area.

The official stated that the Vice President and the Supervising Minister of educationhave made head-way in resolving the strike, but the final involvement of the President is to show ASUUthat there is the commitment of the Federal Government at the highest level.

Already, most of the governing councils of the Universitieshave started meeting to work out modalities for the compulsory re-opening of the Universitiesshould ASUUfail to honour the personal request of President Jonathan.
Scan News gathered that the Supervising Minister of education, Barr. Nyesom Wike and the Vice Chancellors of Public Universitiesalso discussed the re-opening of the schools last Monday. Most of the Vice Chancellors suggested the compulsory re-opening of the schools, should the last ditch efforts fail.
It was gathered that security report available to the Presidency may have necessitated this line of action to salvage the Universitiessystem from the direction it is facing at present.
