Fashola BANS Skating On Highways in Lagos !!

Posted by Unknown Rabu, 20 November 2013 0 komentar
“They cannot skate on the highways. It is a violation of the traffic law 2010. I implore all parents to call their children and their wards to order because any child found skating on the highway will be arrested and will be brought to justice. It must stop today. Skating on the highways has to stop now. The danger is too much and it is the responsibility of the government to safe lives,”
 Continue

On skating, Fashola said he noticed that the youths had also taken to skating because the road is safe, saying government was not going to discourage them but that they should do that in designated places like recreation centres, stadia and others.

On the position of the government concerning road development in FESTAC Town, Fashola explained that the state government was having an issue with the Federal government, pointing out that the taxes and land charges being collected by the FHA were being sent to Abuja.

“I have said that the Federal Housing Authority is an anathema to the current constitution. The Federal Government does not own land, so, I don’t see how it can have a housing authority. But it was created during the military and now that we are in a civilian dispensation, as I made a case on Saturday when we were in Sokoto, this is one of the laws that the National Assembly should simply amend or repeal to bring them in conformity with the current dispensation,” he said.

On LASTMA, the governor pointed out that its primary responsibility was to keep the state traffic moving, stressing that “this is the reason why the agency exists. Arresting traffic offenders is secondary. If making an arrest will increase the traffic, let the offenders go. I say this not because I don’t want law breakers to be apprehended and brought to justice. But law breakers cannot undermine our main objective.

“The longer people stay more in traffic, the more money is wasted and fuel are burnt and when people stay more in traffic, this leads to increase in the price of goods in the state. But with a moving traffic, price of goods will be stable.”

Fashola explained that the challenge of managing traffic in Lagos State necessitated the need for the meeting with the Special Traffic Mayors, while stressing the need to pay attention to road safety measures for the betterment of all.

“Over the last few days, we have begun to experience traffic gridlock within the state. There are couples of factors that we all must be aware. We promised to address inner roads and at the moment we have commenced work on 200 inner roads in the state. It shouldn’t be surprising that the construction is causing traffic in the state because these are areas where people are already living especially on Joel Ogunnaike, Kodesho and others.

“The access to those roads will definitely be impaired. That is part of the problem. Also, we are getting closer to the Christmas and New Year. At this time, there is heavy movement of people at the same time on the road,” he explained.

Pastor Takes His Wife's Undies to a herbalist For Money Rituals In Lagos

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
A sad housewife, Caroline Omoseebi, has asked the Alakuko Customary Court in Lagos State to dissolve her 44-year-old marriage to her husband, Pastor Ayemisan, over his attempt to use her for money rituals.

Caroline confessed to the court that her husband took her panties to a herbalist:
“He is the one that deflowered me, now he wants to use me for money rituals and has taken my panties to a herbalist. this was why I took my belongings out of his house.
“My husband insisted that he has to be rich by whatever means, and that was why he joined the secret cult. He has put a sign on my child for ritual purpose. He even tried to inflict me and one of our children with partial stroke...
“Though he is the father of our seven children, I will not go back to his house.”

According to Caroline, they got married 44 years ago and have grown up children. She added that they were living in harmony before their marriage started facing challenges due to her husband's greed.
Pastor Ayemisani, who was a carpenter before he became a pastor, denied all the allegations. He said that his wife was telling lies against him, insisting that he is a "real" pastor.

He also alleged that they never had problem until she started moving with bad friends.

“Since she joined the club of bad friends 10 years ago, she has become uncontrollable,” he said.

Funny enough, Pastor Ayemisan told the court that he was not ready to divorce his wife and he is now ready to change his wrong ways.

The court president, Mr. Godwin Awosola, adjourned the case for judgment with a warning that the couple and all other related parties should maintain peace.

The wife, Caroline, however insisted that she can't stay in one house with him so as not to be used for rituals.

Disagreement Rocks Yoruba Comitee Set Up for confab In Lagos.

Posted by Unknown Sabtu, 02 November 2013 0 komentar
THE South-West geo-political zone, yesterday, was divided on how the outcome of the proposed National Conference should become law. While some agreed that the report should be sent to the National Assembly for consideration as declared by President Goodluck Jonathan, others said a referendum of the people is sufficient.
 Continue after the break.
However, another opinion said the National Assembly should make a law to back the confab so that the dialogue will not be an exercise in illegality. This came as Itsekiri leader, Chief Mrs Rita Lori-Ogbebor, who attended the hearing, said the Itsekiri ethnic nationality is in full support of the conference, adding that she will embark on extensive mobilization across the country to drum up support for the exercise.

Mr Bukhari Bello, Dr Akilu Sanni Indabawa , Senator Femi Okurounmu and Senator Khairat Abdulrasaq Gwadabe at the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue South west’s interactive session held yesterday 010102013 at NIIA Kofo Abayomi V I Lagos. Photo Shola Oyelese
The event, which was held at the main auditorium of the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos, was anchored by 11 members of the 13-man committee led by Senator Femi Okurounmu. The absentees are Professor Anya O. Anya, who is in Umuahia for the Council meeting of the University of Agriculture, Umudike and Col Tony Nyiam, whose continued membership is shrouded in doubt following the ugly incident that happened during the panel’s sitting in Benin.

For over six hours, the packed hall witnessed interesting contributions from the Afenifere, Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), Campaign for Democracy (CD), Yoruba National Assembly (YNA), Yoruba Unity Forum (YUF), Southwest Consultative Forum (SCF), Aka-Ikenga, Igbo Leaders of Thought, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) and Coalition of Oodua Self-Determination Groups (COSEG) among others.

Afenifere, represented by Yinka Odumakin said: “All decisions reached by the conference should be made into a referendum and the President should take a bill to the National assembly for it to be included in the constitution. The conference should have equal representation by all the six zones of the country. At least 100 delegates should come from each zone. We should look at the composition of government on whether it should be a federal state or not. We should also insist that every state should generate its own revenue because we are sharing money derived from oil, no one wants to work again.”

The Afenifere Renewal Group, which was represented by Chief Wale Oshun, picked holes in the ongoing constitution amendment exercise of the National Assembly, which it described as an exercise in futility. He said: “The time to talk to one another is now. We should talk of the decline in our country in terms of infrastructure, education, health etc. We should look at the legislative structure, whether it should be full or part time, internal security and other issues that have become a problem.

The ethnic nationalities should be the basis for negotiation and each nationality should have the opportunity of selecting those who will represent them. No interest group like Labour, etc should be involved. It should be strictly in terms of nationalities and the exercise should last for nine months.”

Speaking for YNA, General Alani Akinrinade said that the President should use all the powers available to him and ensure that the outcome of the conference is legal. “Anyone who refuses to endorse what the people have agreed on can go and form their own country” he said.
The Yoruba Unity Forum, which was represented by Bishop Gbonigi said that the ethnic nationalities are the true stakeholders and should be duly represented; political parties should not be allowed to play any role in selecting participants and for the dialogue to receive national acceptance, there should be equal representation from each political zone. “The socio-cultural organisations should produce delegates to the conference and the size of the delegation should not be more than 400.”
The OPC, in presentation signed by Otunba Gani Adams (national co-ordinator), Lasun Ogunfowokan (general secretary) and Mudashiru Aderibigbe (national treasurer), said the federation should be based on six regions arising from the current six geo-political zones.

It also called for a federation with a loose centre and practicable federating units; devolution of powers, abolishing of the power of the Federal Government to declare state of emergency in federating units, and adoption of parliamentary system of government . OPC suggested that the conference should last for four months and should comprise all ethnic nationalities and “once the draft is produced, the constitution should then pass through the same process as the 1963 Republican Constitution, which would involve passage by the National Assembly and proclamation by the President of Nigeria.”

Dr. Joe Odumakin of CD disagreed with those who say that this is not the time to hold a dialogue. “We disagree with those who say that this is not the time to hold a dialogue. Also, whatever the outcome of the conference should be made into a referendum that will become law instead of giving it to the National Assembly to be ratified” she said.

She also suggested that international organisations should be invited to attend the national conference as observers. Dr Joe Odumakin, said on the sidelines of an interactive session of the National Conference Advisory Committee that observer status for such bodies should be considered.
“We urge the committee to also extend observer status to other international human rights organisations and international media. This is to give more credibility and authenticity to the dialogue,” she said, adding that the dialogue was the only option to save the country

Elder statesman, Dr Tunji Braithwaite, while speaking for the Southwest Consultative, said that the conference would not fail and urged the Yoruba to embrace it. “I can say with certainty that this conference would not fail. The fact that Obasanjo’s conference failed does not mean that this one would fail. This is a lifetime opportunity for us to decide on the future of the country and I want all ethnic nationality to be represented,” he said
Speaking in like manner, Chief Lori-Ogbebor, told reporters that impressions that the confab is not real are wrong. Insisting that something must come out of the dialogue, which she promised to tour round the country to mobilize and convince people on the necessity, she said she has no doubt that the proposed conference will be a success.

While expressing delight, that most of the groups are in agreement that participation at the conference should be based on the ethnic nationalities, Lori-Ogbebor suggested politicians and political parties should have nothing to do with the selection of delegates.

The Itsekiri leader said the outcome of the conference should not be sent to the National Assembly for consideration, rather, resolutions arrived at the conference should become law without any alteration or ratification by the National Assembly or anybody.
Elder Uma Elaizu, in a presentation for Igbo leaders of thought, suggested a 360-delegate conference with each of the six geo-political zones contributing 60 delegates.

At the confab, he said a series of questions should be answered. “Do we want to stay together as a country? If no, that marks the end of the conference and then people can go and form their own republics. If yes, other issues should be discussed. And the issues to be discussed include the system of government, presidential or parliamentary, security, sanctity of life, armed forces, etc.”
Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, who spoke for some patriots, identified with the submission of the YUF and partly with that of Afenifere.

He opposed the prevailing unitary system of government and suggested that Yoruba delegates should also include Yoruba people in Kwara, Kogi, Edo and Delta apart from those in South-West.
He said the outcome of the dialogue should be subjected to a referendum and should become law through a simple majority.

Barrister Onyekachi Ubani of Ikeja NBA suggested that the conference should be backed by an Act of the National Assembly so that it will not be an exercise that will end in the dustbin.
Thereafter, he suggested that the outcome of the confab should become through a plebiscite.
On his part, Dr Goody Uwazurike of Aka-Ikenga noted that most Nigerian cities are dominated by non-indigenes, whom he suggested should also form part of the delegates from the affected cities. According to him, 60 per cent of the 17 million inhabitants of Lagos are non-indigenes and a similar scenario obtains in Kano.

3 men gang rap*e 15 year old girl in Lagos

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
Three men have allegedly gang-raped a 15-year old girl at the Ikorodu area of Lagos, as the police are alleged to be threatening the victim’s parents to settle the matter out of court.

The state government had earlier blamed the police for frustrating rape cases by threatening victims and their families to withdraw their cases. Two of the men have been arraigned at one of the newly established Family Courts in Ikeja for allegedly raping the girl.

The suspects are being tried by the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender, OPD, while the third suspect is still at large. It was learnt that the victim was lured to No 23, Fola Mustapha Street, in Ajegunle area of Ikorodu by her classmate (name withheld), a 16-year old girl, on the pretext that she wanted to return a text book which she had earlier borrowed from the victim.

The victim was deceived by her friend who had already arranged with the three suspected rapists to have sex with her forcefully. The three suspects; Yusuf Mohammed, Rasheed Oyedepo and Tunde were alleged to have inflicted bodily injury on the girl (name withheld).
It was gathered that the raped girl’s friend deliberately delayed her classmate for hours and enabled the heinous crime by putting on the generator set, on the pretext that she needed to charge her phone.
According to the OPD , the victim wanted to take her leave in annoyance when it was getting too late for the her to return home, but her friend told her to wait for a while before taking her to a new room where she was raped in turns by the gang.

While taking turns to rape the girl, the noise from the generator and the music they were playing prevented the people outside from hearing the screaming and wailing of the girl. On getting home in a bad condition, the girl’s mother took her to a private clinic for medical attention.

She was taken to Ikorodu General Hospital for proper medical treatment, where it was discovered that her womb had been tampered with at the private clinic.

The victim was in a critical condition as she was admitted in the hospital for three days while undergoing blood transfusion. A new twist has, however, been added to the story as the police has transferred the suspects, whose cases are already in court, to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti for investigation, an act the OPD described as unlawful.

It was gathered that the police had gone to the girl’s family threatening the mother for taking the case to OPD, after which they transferred the suspects to SCID, Panti. It would be recalled that the government has established a clinic where DNA tests will be conducted on rape victims and suspected rapists to enhance prosecution of the cases.

It was gathered that a member of the community, High Chief Babatunde Balogun caught the mother of seven when she was  trying to dispose the baby at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday. When questioned on the content of the sack, she claimed she was coming from the market where she bought some household items.
However, on a closer look, Balogun discovered that the sack contained a dead day old baby the woman allegedly had just delivered. He then called the attention of the other residents. Neighbours told P.M News that after Mujidat’s husband known as Baba Mushin died about three years ago, they have seen men visiting her residence, the house built by her late husband.
When asked if she planned to throw away the baby because of an alleged paternity mess, she denied, claiming  that a welder turned block maker near her residence was responsible for the pregnancy that resulted in the birth of the dead baby she was caught with.

She claimed she took delivery of the baby by herself because she found it easy and therefore did not go to any hospital or sought anybody’s  help.

At about 9 p.m yesterday when P.M.NEWS visited the area, residents of the area were still milling around the residence of the woman.

Officials of the Community Development Association, CDA, in the area later accompanied the woman and her sack of baby to the Isheri-Oshun Police Division where the matter was reported. At the time of this report, the woman was still being interrogated.

Gov. Fashola presents N489.7b budget estimates for 2014 to Lagos Assembly -

Posted by Unknown 0 komentar
The Lagos State Gov. Babatunde Fashola, on Wednesday presented budget estimates of N489.7 billion for the year 2014 to the State House of Assembly.

Lagos, the former capital of Nigeria is the country’s commercial nerve centre. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the budget was about N8 billion less than the 2013 estimates of N497.27 billion.

NAN further reports that the budget is comprised of a proposed capital expenditure of N225.02 billion and a recurrent figure of N234. 67 billion.

Its capital to recurrent ratio is 58:42 for the year 2014, as against 52:48 in 2013.

The sectoral allocations of the budget in size and percentage terms would be General Public Service N100, 215 billion, which amounts to 20.47 per cent, as against N966, 99 billion for 2013.

Public Order and Safety has N17.97 billion at 3.6 per cent, compared with the N368.03 billion provided for in 2013.

Economic Affairs with N160.05 billion recorded 32.68 per cent, as against N436.17 billion in the 2013 budget.

Environmental Protection was reduced to N39.73 billion, with 8.11 per cent, compared with N44.13 billion in the 2013 financial year.

Others include: Housing and Community Amenities N50.54 billion, amounting to 10.32 per cent, from N46.15 billion in 2013.

The Health sector got N37.81 billion, with 7.72 per cent, compared with N42. 5 billion in 2013.

Also, recreation, culture and religion had N3.48 billion representing 0.71 per cent, as against N5.75 billion in 2013.

A total of N77.42 billion was earmarked for education, which amounted to 15.81 per cent, from N64.34 billion in 2013.

Social Protection has N2.47 billion, representing 0.50 per cent lower than N3. 2 billion in 2013.

“Let me start by saying emphatically that budget implementation in Lagos is no longer a matter of capacity, as we have a highly resourceful and well-motivated work force in the public service.

“The budget is constrained by the limitation of financial resources. As our population continues to grow, the provision that we require to support them and meet their expectation are also growing.

“Regrettably, the financial resources are not growing at the rate of our people’s expectation.

“In order to sustain this progress, we therefore propose a budget of N489.690 billion for the year 2014, “ Fashola said.

Adeyemi Ikuforiji, the Speaker of the House, said that the presentation of the budget by the governor before the House was a constitutional matter.

Ikuforiji said that adherence to the counsel has been the Assembly’s watchword in dealing with the executive arm of government in the budgetary process of Lagos State.

He also said that the House was focusing on how the budget could maximally benefit the generality of the people and address the issues of poverty and deprivation.

“I want to assure you, on behalf of all of us, that we will apply our utmost best, within our legislative powers, to give this budget proposals prompt attention.

“The detailed attention will be given for its transformation into an appropriation bill for the benefit, prosperity, growth and development of Lagos State.

“As the House of Assembly parleys with the executive to move the state forward, let me reiterate here that there is a great need to also put life in our local councils, so that they can realise the objectives of their existence.

“There are indications that various local government councils and local council development areas could perform better than they do presently, if they are adequately funded and monitored.

“Therefore, our state budget proposals should always be geared towards promoting and actualising unity amongst our people, “ Ikuforiji added.

Madam Jailed For Killing Houseboy In Lagos

Posted by Unknown Senin, 28 Oktober 2013 0 komentar
An Ikeja High Court on Monday sentenced a 27-year-old woman, Chiamaka Nnajiofor, to 10 years imprisonment on her culpability in the death of her housekeeper, Oliver Arakwe.

Justice Lateefat Okunnu convicted Nnajiofor for the offence of manslaughter rather than the charge of murder preferred against her.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sentence would be to commence from 22 September, 2011, when she was arraigned.

Nnajiofor and her husband, Elochukwu, 41, were charged to court by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on charge of murder.

In line with the DPP, the couple tortured their 14-year-old Arakwe to death on 17 August, 2010 at 81, Femi Tella Street, Ago Palace Way, Okota, a Lagos suburb.

The couple had pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder.

Delivering her judgment, Okunnu discharged and acquitted Elochukwu because the prosecution led by Mr Femi Adamson, had failed to get in touch him with the alleged crime.

In line with the judge, the evidential burden against the 2nd defendant is very weak.

She ruled: “There is nothing to show that he was part of the flogging his wife instigated that day, and available evidence indicated that he was not in the apartment when it happened.

“The prosecution also didn't prove the charge of murder against Chiamaka beyond reasonable doubts.

“Oliver was a greatly malnourished boy and the pounding of the boy with a belt might have had an inferior effect on a standard 14-year-old.

“It is with this basis that I find Chiamaka, the very first defendant, not guilty of murder. I find her guilty of manslaughter.

“The 2nd defendant, Elochukwu, is discharged and acquitted.”

Commuters in Lagos, western Nigeria, were stranded, Saturday morning, when workers with the Bus Rapid Transit, BRT scheme refused to act as they protested their unpaid salaries. The commuters, who expected to board the bus after the monthly sanitation, were left to bemuse their fate once the boarding points at Ketu and Ojota bus stops were  empty.  It was revealed that the ticketers and drivers refused to act as their salary for last month hadn't been paid-a situation which they're not used to.
 Continue after the break.
The ticketers and bus drivers met using their bosses at their Ketu office and efforts made by our correspondent to obtain the management to talk, proved futile because the correspondent was bundled out of the park and his recording device seized. However, two of the drivers who later spoke on the problem of anonymity, accused a senior staff of cutting their earnings.

According to the drivers who claimed to be a senior staff,” ever since this man came aboard, things have changed drastically. He has kept making promises which he hasn't kept for once. Our salary was always paid on the twenty-fifth of the month but now, we are yet to obtain our salaries.

“We used to obtain eight tins of milk monthly before he came but presently, we don't get any and there isn't any explanation for this.
“The leadership has not also told the truth about our salary because we earn just N45,000 as contrary to the N75,000 that outsiders have been made to believe”
